Lessons from Wisconsin: Americans now understand unions - my latest Boyne City Gazette column

The cat is out of the bag.  Americans now know more about public unions than ever before – and they don’t like what they’ve learned.  Prior to the angry union efforts in the Recall Election of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, we generally accepted without question or thought the public union contracts which American taxpayers fund, not understanding that union members are often paid more than private sector workers, that they pay little or nothing toward their health care insurance and pensions that private-sector workers must fund to a high degree, or that they can take full retirement after about 20 years.  Some teachers retire with up to 95% of their salary provided by us for the rest of their lives as well having  health insurance, and then immediately become substitute teachers in the very same district, getting paid once again for their time.  They are, after all, our employees.  They behave as our bosses.

Americans are discovering that public union bosses are often thugs who threaten their opponents.  They take union dues from members without their consent and then use that money to pay themselves very high salaries, to purchase fancy resorts to benefit union bosses, and spend the rest on getting Democrats elected.

Governor Scott Walker did what he promised to do when elected.  Democrat legislators actually fled the state to avoid losing the vote regarding union negotiations and payments.  The unions then filled the capitol city with members from all over America, protesting loudly and camping out at the state Capitol – causing much damage to the building.  Children were brought from their classrooms to join the protest, while teachers indoctrinated students instead of teaching then how to think. An aura of hatred was inspired.

When given free choice to belong to a union or not, 45% of those in the public union AFSCME in Wisconsin dropped their union membership.  No longer can dues be taken from them involuntarily. In fact 38% of them voted against the recall of Scott Walker.

We Americans now have a better knowledge of why our state and local governments have so much debt, with public union pension obligations bankrupting cities and states. In some school districts, for instance, 70% of taxpayer dollars are spent on pension payments.  Teacher salaries have doubled since 1970, but the number of students has only risen by 8.5%.  And yet competency of graduates has diminished.  More money is clearly not the answer.

Governor Walker has in 1 ½ years turned his state budget from a deficit to a surplus and saved Wisconsin taxpayers $1 billion. He did not ask the unions to do anything radical – just to be part of the solution after decades of oversized salaries and benefits.  Governor Walker raised union member donations from 6% on their health care premiums to 12.6%, while non-union members pay about 25%.  Union workers paid nothing or very little toward their pensions until Walker required them to pay only 5%, while non-union members pay up to 100%.  When the value of non-union retirees’ investments drops, it is they who must absorb the loss, while our taxpayer dollars keep union pensions at promised levels through higher taxes. I applaud the teachers of Boyne City, Harbor Springs & Charlevoix for consenting to changes in their contracts in order to stem rising debt.

Since the Wisconsin failure of unions, unions in Michigan have decided not to follow through on their recall efforts against Michigan’s Governor Snyder, for they realize that their money may not be well spent on recall efforts.  Other states may be emboldened by Walker’s victory to take on the oversized power of the unions in their states, seeking Right to Work laws guaranteeing voluntary union membership and contract renegotiations, and saving state budgets.

Forty percent of Americans identify themselves as conservative – 21% as liberal.  Conservative Americans learned from Wisconsin that if they only get out of their chairs to affect an outcome in an election, they can out-organize and out-raise the left and the unions. It is an empowering feeling, one on which to build.   Perhaps this recall effort awakened the sleeping giant.  Conservatives are no longer the silent majority.  May they continue to join the battle for America.

While China Watch remains one of the most glaring examples of the Communist Party’s campaign to influence American thought leaders, lawmakers warn that China is engaged in a well-funded and wide-ranging relationship with American businesses, lobbyists, and other entities across the U.S.
China’s goal, they say, is to whitewash its human rights record, foster sympathy for its cause, and infiltrate U.S. markets, potentially endangering the country’s national security.

As the rest of America loses their jobs, the arrogant Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) that makes its money off the backs of the poor taxpayers is upset that they were only offered a measly 20% pay raise.
Oh the humanities. It’s such an outrage… that they’d get any pay raise at all.

A new study conducted by Ernst and Young proves conclusively that the President’s tax increase would be devastating to the economy and jobs.

The study finds that, if Congress misguidedly adopted President Obama’s plan to raise taxes on job creators by allowing the Bush-era tax policies to expire for incomes over $200,000 ($250,000 for married filers), the economy and jobs would suffer terribly. ...

There are almost 13 million Americans out of work today. President Obama’s tax increase would needlessly add almost three-quarters of a million people to that already much too large number. An eye-opening new report by the Government Accountability Institute reveals that President Barack Obama averages just eight minutes more a week on economic meetings than the average dog owner spends walking their dog.

Just how much do Obama and his mentor have in common?

Davis was so radical the FBI placed him on the government Security Index, and his FBI file exceeds 600 pages in length. A columnist by trade, Davis edited and wrote for communist newspapers around the U.S., where he frequently used words like ‘change’ and ‘fundamental transformation.’ His writings indicate that he demonized big business, despised oil companies, considered Wall Street to be a group of “greedy millionaires,” and bashed Republican tax cuts for going easy on the rich.

In Roanoke, Virginia recently, the President explained to an enthusiastic crowd that his Republican opponents' "basic theory is, if wealthy investors are doing well then everybody does well.  So if we spend trillions of dollars on more tax cuts mostly for the wealthy, that that's somehow going to create jobs, even if we have to pay for it by gutting education and gutting job-training programs and gutting transportation projects, and maybe even seeing middle-class folks have a higher tax burden."  [Lies, lies and more lies.  When he says "gut" he means reducing the AUTOMATIC increase in all programs, which is still a raise in support. The Mexican government has been working with the United States Department of Agriculture to increase participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps.
USDA has an agreement with Mexico to promote American food assistance programs, including food stamps, among Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals and migrant communities in America.
“USDA and the government of Mexico have entered into a partnership to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance,” the USDA explains in a brief paragraph on their “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance” web page. “Mexico will help disseminate this information through its embassy and network of approximately 50 consular offices.”

Yes, as if you didn't know it before, a substantial number of Muslim are just fine with terrorism, barbarism, and murder if the targets are Jews.  In Britain itself, the first move by the Muslim Council of Britain after it was formed in 2001 was to call for a ban on the U.K.'s Holocaust Memorial Day.  And British schools are now routinely banning teaching anything about the Holocaust for fear of "contradicting versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship."

By all accounts, Mitt Romney was sensational today in Pennsylvania. His theme was Barack Obama’s revelatory “you didn’t build that” speech. Over the lunch hour (here in the Midwest), Twitter was burning up with commentary from those who were watching Romney’s speech live. The commentary was unanimously euphoric. Romney spoke without teleprompter or notes, something Obama rarely does without getting into trouble. He was, everyone agreed, passionate and articulate. The state of Minnesota has found nearly 24,000 possible cases of fraud involving driver’s licenses issued in the state, Fox Minneapolis reports. A facial recognition scan of the state’s 11 million photo database found nearly 1.3 million duplicates.

The grant announcement was made Tuesday by Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez, (D-NJ), two pro-abortion Democrats in the U.S. Senate who are longtime allies of Planned Parenthood. The funding comes through the Department of Health and Human Services to Planned Parenthood and other agencies.

Local officials in San Bernardino County, Calif., met last week to consider a controversial proposal to use eminent domain powers to seize and refinance underwater mortgages.
The plan, which is being championed by wealthy investors with deep ties to the Democratic Party, has drawn criticism from opponents who see it as an egregious violation of property rights and an exercise in political cronyism.
“This is a group of folks who want to come in and use the government to help acquire properties for them and provide an impressive return on their investment,” said Steven Greenhut, a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute, a free-market think tank.
The new authority would apply eminent domain power, which allows governments to forcibly acquire private property for public benefit. The following is a joint news release issued by the Michigan and Ohio Departments of Natural Resources:

Federal and state wildlife officials working in conjunction with academic researchers today announced six water samples taken from Sandusky and north Maumee bays tested positive for the presence of Asian carp environmental DNA in Michigan and Ohio waters.

The positive samples were among 417 taken from Lake Erie in August 2011, and more than 2,000 samples taken from the Great Lakes Basin since 2010. The Lake Erie batch was recently analyzed and test results were confirmed by eDNA researchers this week. The six positive samples represent less than 1.5 percent of the Lake Erie samples.

Four samples from Sandusky Bay, in Ohio waters, tested positive for bighead carp eDNA, while two samples from north Maumee Bay, in Michigan waters, were positive for silver carp eDNA.

In response to these findings, electro-shocking and netting began Friday in Sandusky Bay with no evidence of Asian carp found. However, additional testing and monitoring are planned by the Ohio and Michigan Departments of Natural Resources in conjunction with partner agencies.

The findings indicate the presence of genetic material left behind by the species, such as scales, excrement or mucous, but not the establishment of Asian carp in Lake Erie. Positive eDNA tests are regarded by the scientific community as an indicator of the species’ recent presence, however, positive results can occur whether the organism was alive or dead.

Remember earlier this year when exactly zero Democrats voted for President Obama’s FY2013 budget? The House voted 414-0 and the Senate voted 99-0 against the President’s budget. This was the second year in a row the Senate unanimously rejected the President’s budget.

And it’s happening again.
Another of the President’s proposals will not be accepted by Senate Democrats. Two weeks ago, President Obama laid out his tax “plan” that would hike taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year – his definition of rich. He also, in his FY2013 budget, proposed hiking the tax rate on dividends, which is the money paid out to investors when a company does well.
Despite reports to the contrary, Senate Democrats have their own plan and will not introduce the plan being touted by the President and left-leaning pundits. Instead, their plan sets the top tax rate for dividends at 23.8%, nearly 20 percentage points lower than what President Obama sought, though a substantial increase from the current rate of 15%. The Senate plan also includes a top estate tax rate of 45% and a one-year alternative minimum tax (AMT) patch to prevent the tax from crushing middle-class families. Democratic Governors Association Chairman Caught Falsifying Data on State Website

Maryland’s governor Martin O’Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, was caught posting false data to his state’s website this week in response to a story about the wealthy fleeing Maryland to escape the state’s rising taxes. The Examiner posted the story on July 7, 2012:

“In 2007, Maryland passed some of the largest tax increases in history, and I believe a lot of the exodus of taxpayers out of the state has to do with the tax burden,” said Larry Hogan, founder of Change Maryland and a former member of Republican Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s administration.

In a victory for Republicans, the federal government has agreed to let Florida use a law enforcement database to challenge people's right to vote if they are suspected of not being U.S. citizens.
The agreement, made in a letter to Florida Gov. Michigan is breeding poverty  [One man's solution]

since the national attention is on birth control, here's my idea: If we want to fight poverty, reduce violent crime and bring down our embarrassing drop-out rate, we should swap contraceptives for fluoride in Michigan's drinking water.
We've got a baby problem in Michigan. Too many babies are born to immature parents who don't have the skills to raise them, too many are delivered by poor women who can't afford them, and too many are fathered by sorry layabouts who spread their seed like dandelions and then wander away from the consequences.
Michigan's social problems and the huge costs attached to them won't recede until we embrace reproductive responsibility.
Last year, 43 percent of the babies born in Michigan were to single mothers. And even though Medicaid pays for birth control, half of the babies born here were to mothers on welfare. Eighteen percent were born to teenagers who already had at least one child. And nearly 1-in-5 new babies had mothers with no high school diploma.
Ispoke with an educator who is dealing with a single mother, mid-30s, with 12 children and a 13th on the way. The kids have an assortment of fathers with one thing in common — none married their mother. This woman's womb is a poverty factory.
It wouldn't matter if Michigan's economy were bursting with jobs, the woman and her children would still be poor.
Who's supporting these kids? If you're a taxpayer, you are. The roughly 45,000 children a year born onto the welfare rolls is a major reason Medicaid will consume 25 percent of next year's budget.
In the 1990s, Michigan considered penalizing women who had more babies while on welfare, but pro-life groups killed the idea out of fear it would lead to more abortions.

Testimony has concluded in the trial of Texas 'Voter I.D.' law, after attorneys for the state demolished the main arguments raised against the law by the Obama Administration, and got the key witness for the Justice Department to admit he got his information from Wikipedia, 1200 WOAI news reports.

US SECRETARY of State Hillary Clinton has been taunted by chants of "Monica, Monica" by tomato-throwing demonstrators as she visited the Egyptian port city of Alexandria.
The chants, referring to the Monica Lewinsky scandal when her husband, Bill Clinton, was president, were heard outside the US consulate as she visited for its reopening.
An embarrassed Egyptian security official said they were chanting "Monica, Monica" and "Irhal, Clinton" (Get out, Clinton.)
Tomatoes, shoes and a water bottle were thrown at part of Mrs Clinton's motorcade as it pulled up, protected by riot police, although a US official said Mrs Clinton's own vehicle was not hit.
The protest appears to have been the result of suspicions that Washington had helped the Muslim Brotherhood win elections in Egypt in the wake of last year's ouster of president Hosni Mubarak after 18 days of massive street protests.

Management had planned to show it in one of its medium-sized auditoriums, but bumped it to one the multiplex’s largest rooms and turned away 200 people.
Sources say some moviegoers sat in the aisles Thursday and waited as much as 90 minutes to meet D’Souza and Gerald Molen, one of the Oscar-winning producers of Schindler’s List, who was a co-producer of 2016 along with Doug Sain.
